Based on statistical data provided by tax authorities, the number of business start-ups in the liberal professions has been specified for the first time. In 2012, approx. 82 000 start-ups have been recorded in the liberal professions. For 2013, a decreasing level of start-up activities is expected. The liberal professions account for approx. 16.7 % of the total number of business start-ups in all economic sectors. City states (urban regions) feature a substantially higher propensity for business start-ups than large (more thinly populated) Federal States. With 64 business start-ups in the liberal professions per 10 000 inhabitants, Berlin holds the top position among all 16 German Federal States.
