The present study addresses the question what types of public support measures for company successions are offered in Germany and to what extent state support is necessary. In addition to a compilation of public support programmes, problems in company successions are analysed based on a literature review. The literature review shows that public support for company successions cannot be justified from the perspective of welfare economics. However, compensation for systematic disadvantages of specific individuals or business types and the principle of help for self-help provide an adequate explanation for subsidies. These can be granted for consultancy services as well as for financial support for transferees, who set up their own business for the first time by way of company succession. Consultancy services for transferors are only justified during the early awareness raising and preparatory stage of a company succession in small and medium-sized enterprises.
