The present study analyses how the percentage share of owner- and family-led enterprises in the total number of all enterprises has changed since the reporting year 1998. Therefore, approx. 16 500 German enterprises have been analysed with regard to their ownership and management structures. It is shown that the percentage share has slightly decreased from 94.8 % (1998) to 93.6 % (current reporting year 2014). Furthermore, the study also investigates the current importance of pure auxiliary units within complex enterprises. Approx. 33 300 enterprises (i.e. 1.0 % of all German enterprises) are pure auxiliary units and normally would have to be consolidated according to the EU guidelines for business statistics.
