The underlying study deals with companies being part of the German Mittelstand which are innovative without conducting own RnD. These firms are mostly small and opperate in service sectors. Furthermore, we analyze whether own RnD could be replaced by other activities within the innovation process. We find that for realizing product innovations RnD is the most important factor. Thereby the role of RnD is higher the more radical an innovation is. In contrast, process and non-technological innovations could be implemented without conducting own RnD.
