We examined regional entrepreneurial ecosystems in five selected entrepreneurial hotspots in Germany. Academic institutions are an important part of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. Especially cooperations between academic institutions and regional stakeholders provide location economies for entrepreneurial hotspots. Although the quantity of entrepreneurial support is sufficient, there is still room for improvement regarding bundling of support programmes and cooperation between regional stakeholders. Collaborations between established enterprises and start-ups seem to have a striking impact on regional entrepreneurial activity. Regions with a high life quality attract talents as well as entrepreneurs. But the advantages of attractive urban regions with highly developed infrastructure and a strong economy also bear some barriers for start-ups. Especially the high costs and low availability for working and living space as well as talents are challenging for start-ups.
