After the financial crises British firms had much more difficulties than the German firms to get access to credits. The study shows that one reason for this development might lie in the specific features of the German regional banking system. Thus, due to the proximity to the entrepreneur regional banks can consider soft information in the lending process. It is therefore possible to understand and better assess exceptional situations and their causes. In recent years the lending processes of all banks have been heavily regulated. This might disproportionately burden regional- and cooperative banks financially.
