SME's handling of the demographic challenges - A replication survey

The IfM Bonn analyzes the reactions of SMEs to the demographic change in a trend study covering 2007 to 2017/18. The results show that SMEs are much better informed than before. The majority has already adapted their distribution strategy to the aging population and offers measures to strengthen the ties between employees and employer and to preserve the ability to work. SMEs address the expected lack of labor by focusing the recruitment process on women, elderly people and immigrants. On a regional level, demographic change seems to be more of a concern for enterprises in structurally weak areas. Therefore, economic policy should take regional disparities into account.
