This study investigates the economies of the sub-Saharan States in Africa, which account for only 2 % of the world GDP. Using statistical data, it is analyzed whether German companies have successfully established business relationships in this region. Even though several thousand SME have started ac-tivities in Sub-Saharan Africa, these are relatively few in the global context of German exports and compared to the activity of other European countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Around 13,000 SME export goods, but only 3,000 import goods or raw materials from this region. Despite the low purchasing power in most countries, German SME have predominantly sales-driven objectives in Africa.
