Means-tested benefits for self-employed: permanent condition or intermezzo?

Sometimes not only employees but also self-employed persons get in a situation where they have to rely on means-tested benefits in addition to their earned incomes. However, the majority of self-employed individuals are able to improve their incomes and end their need of means-tested benefits within a relatively short period of time. In general, our results are suggestive of positive effects for the self-employed because it provides them with the required time for restructuring their businesses and for improving their incomes.
